Chemical Safety and Hygiene

Training

All employees must enroll in either the online WHMIS course (general audience) or the Chemical Safety course (workers in handling or with access to hazardous products). Visit the Course Registration webpage for more information.

Supervisors will assign training based upon the type of work being performed and the area in which work is being performed. If a supervisor has questions about what training to assign, they can contact HSE for support (hse.ok@ubc.ca).

Chemical Safety Training

This course is intended for those who handle or have access to hazardous products.

This course discusses legislative guidelines such as the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System and Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations, as well as UBC best-practices for general safety, storage, handling, controls, and emergency procedures. This training has three components.  The first is an online component through WPL.  The second component is a synchronous online component through zoom and the third is a very short in-person spill clean up practical training session (you will register for the second and third section when completing the first section).

Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS) Training

WHMIS training is a requirement for employees who do not handle or have access to hazardous products, but who may come across hazardous product at the workplace. A hazardous product is any substance that meets the criteria specified in the Hazardous Products Act (HPA). WHMIS is workplace-specific, therefore, WHMIS certification received at places of employment other than UBC does not transfer over.

Lab Design Guidelines

These guidelines should be followed as an aid to designing any laboratories on campus. If there are any questions or concerns in relation to the content, HSE can be engaged for further support.
